Dry Core Transformer: How Core Material Impacts Energy Loss & Overall Reliability

The transformer core is not just a component, but the backbone of a transformer's efficiency, stability, and longevity in the realm of power distribution. At Jiangsu Ryan Electric, we know that the choice of core material is directly related to a transformer's life cycle cost and operational resiliency. We work as a joint venture with Eaton (USA) to create solutions where cutting edge core technology meets global standards, so your infrastructure will perform at its best.

The Science of Core Loss: Hysteresis and Eddy Currents

The two main types of energy losses in the transformer core are hysteresis loss and eddy current loss. Hysteresis loss arises due to continuous switching of the magnetic domains with the alternating magnetic field and causes heat generation during every cycle. Eddy current losses are caused by circulating currents that are generated in the conductive material of the core itself. These losses, when combined, waste energy and increase operating temperatures, which causes insulation to age and reduce their service life. The key to mitigation lies in the core material's magnetic properties – namely, its grain orientation and electrical resistivity. The higher the quality of the material and the better the grain structure is optimized, for example, by using Cold-Rolled Grain-Oriented (CRGO) silicon steel, the lower the hysteresis coefficient will be and the thinner the laminations will be, which will reduce eddy current losses and keep the operation cooler.

Material Grades and Performance: The Ryan Advantage

There is measurable and significant difference between core material grades. Studies have shown that there can be a dramatic difference between core losses of premium CRGO steel (M3 grade) and standard grade materials and this difference will add up to substantial energy savings during the transformer's life. In our dry-type transformers, we use only the highest-quality grain oriented silicon steel and incorporate step-lap miter joints in the core design. This complex joining process reduces vibration and noise, and guarantees the best flux dispersion, contributing to even more efficiency and durability. Browse our transformers series, including VPI, Cast Resin and Power Transformer up to 10MVA, and experience outstanding performance and reliability in every application ranging from renewable energy to hyperscale data center.

Beyond Efficiency: Reliability and Thermal Management

The core material is more than the kilowatt-hour savings: it's a cornerstone of transformer reliability. Superior magnetic materials produce less heat which minimizes the thermal stress to the magnetic core and the insulation system surrounding the magnetic core. Such is the case for dry-type transformers, in which the solid insulation system has to remain dielectric under stable thermal conditions. Our high-tech manufacturing processes such as Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VPI) for dry products provide void free insulation that will complement a low loss core to inhibit partial discharge and sudden outages. Clients, such as Microsoft and State Grid, entrust us with this integrated thermal management and material selection, which forms the foundation of their confidence in our solutions and services.

Validated Quality: From Raw Materials to Global Standards

We at Ryan Electric have tested and certified the core material performance that we have and we are confident about it. We have a dual test bays (35kV and 110kV) in-house CNAS accredited laboratory for performing comprehensive routine, type and special tests for all transformer designs. We test core loss properties to strict international standards such as IEEE, UL, CE, ASTA and DEKRA. This rigorous testing and procedure, from the inspection of the raw materials to the final testing of the systems, guarantees that every transformer we produce meets and exceeds the demands of the industry for an efficient, reliable operation, and we are trusted in more than 50 countries all over the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Southeast Asia.
