For dry type transformers in commercial, data center or substation applications, procurement teams need to look at much more than the first cost of the transformer. Ryan Electric, a joint venture with Eaton (USA), provides transformer solutions that are reliable, efficient and fully customized to meet the needs of more than 80 countries. We have a range of products up to 10 MVA and from 3.3 kV to 132 kV and include VPIs, cast resin, pad mounted, compact substation and more. This is a guide to the main criteria for procurement and evaluation of bids so that you can make informed decisions about a suitable solution.
Quote Comparison Basis: Including Loss Electricity Cost Conversion
In order to make a transparent quote comparison, the price of the equipment is not enough. At Ryan Electric, we suggest that all bids contain a loss electricity cost conversion of all no-load losses and load losses over the expected service life. Our dry-type and VPI transformers are engineered to be low-loss, high-efficiency, which may make the total cost of ownership more cost-effective than lower-priced products. When assessing suppliers, ask for a breakdown of the no-load loss, load loss and efficiency at specified load factors. These values are verified with precision in our dual 35 kV/110 kV test labs and CNAS-accredited lab. Determine the present value equivalent cost of electricity from local tariff if there are losses, then the economic winner will be evident.
Copper Price and Raw Material Clauses
Copper is a significant cost component in transformer production. Copper price adjustment provisions should be specifically stated in the procurement contracts. Ryan Electric encourages fair and transparent raw material clauses: price of copper base, the reference index (LME copper), the formula of adjustment, and the validity period. Since we produce the cast resin, VPI, oil-immersed and distribution transformers up to 10MVA, we can ensure material terms of the contract to safeguard the buyer and the seller from the extreme volatility of the market. Verbalize firm pricing or open to negotiation, ask for copper content and supplier traceability. It helps you to keep your project budget and ensures that the quality of your project is never sacrificed with material substitution.
Factory Audit and Type Test Report Checklist
Prior to awarding a contract, perform an audit and type test reports at the factory. We are happy to accept an audit of our automated production lines, three test bays for cast resin dry type transformers, liquid immersed power transformers and substations. Your checklist should include routine test reports, type test reports, special test reports, UL, ASTA, CSA, CE, and DEKRA certifications, D-U-N-S registered, CNAS certificates, and compliance with ISO, IEC, IEEE, CSA, and GB standards. Ensure that the factory has two test labs equipped with 35 kV/110 kV power supply and can conduct tests in-house. Check the test bays of dry type or oil immersed substations. A comprehensive documentation package minimizes risk and fast tracks project approval.
Delivery, Penalty Clauses, Spare Parts, and Warranty Scope
A delivery timetable and contractual penalties should be specified. Set lead times for every product series, VPI transformers, cast resin transformers, single-phase and three-phase pad mounted transformers, unit substations and compact substations. Provide delay penalty clauses based on milestone dates including caps and force majeure provisions. Ryan Electric's international project experience with companies like Microsoft and State Grid shows us the urgency of data center, renewable energy and utility projects. Establish a spare parts list (such as bushings, temperature controllers, fans), warranty scope (what is covered, how long is the warranty, any warranties that are not valid). Every transformer produced is tested from materials to delivery against IEEE, UL, CE, ASTA and DEKRA standards. The warranty and spare parts coverage plan helps to keep the equipment up and running while reducing lifetime costs.
