What Features to Look for in a High-Performing Power Transformer

Buying a power transformer is never just a routine purchase. It is a decision that will affect the performance, reliability and long-term cost of your factory, utility grid, or renewable energy system. Considering there are countless technical specifications and configuration options, knowing what to look for between standard solutions and those designed to perform requires extensive expertise. In the years that we have developed and produced thousands of transformers for every type of global project, the Jiangsu Ryan Electric team has come to identify the key qualities that define high-performing models. Let us guide you through the features that should factor into your power transformer selection.

Superior Core Material and Winding Design

A power transformer is centered around its magnetic core and electrical windings. Transformer efficiency depends on high-quality magnetic cores —whether made of premium grain-oriented silicon steel or amorphous metal which offer improved characteristics with low hysteresis and eddy-current losses. The winding is equally critical. Its configuration should minimize leakage flux, allow uniform distribution of voltage, and maximize cooling effectiveness. At Ryan Electric, our winding is fully automated, so all lines are maintained at stringent dimensional tolerances, and VPI of dry types, or proper oil circulation of oil-immersed transformers, are accomplished, preventing void formation and attendant partial discharge. Cast resin transformers have windings fully encapsulated within them for superb strength and moisture protection. Always look for a power transformer where the quality of core material and windings is a major design factor - these basic elements affect efficiency, the variation in voltage across a winding under load and the ability of the power transformer to remain cool under normal conditions.

Comprehensive Testing and Certification

A high-performance power transformer cannot be assembled and shipped without comprehensive electrical and mechanical testing. Work with a manufacturer that conducts more than just routine tests (such as, ratio, resistance, insulation testing). Ask for a supplier that also carries out the most rigorous type tests, such as lightning impulse withstand testing, temperature rise, and short-circuit strength testing. At Ryan Electric, both our 35 kV and 110 kV test bays are fully CNAS certified, allowing for full scope power transformer testing and validation to standards such as IEEE, IEC and CSA. In addition, we offer special testing including partial discharge measurement and zero-sequence impedance analysis for those unique projects. In addition to testing, ask for certifications such as UL, CE, ASTA and DEKRA on the transformer you consider purchasing to know it has been independently certified. The test of a high-performing power transformer is knowing its rating has been pushed to the limit before it arrives on your site.

Robust Thermal Management System

Heat will dictate transformer life. High performance power transformers rely on effective thermal management that can operate in the zone well below winding and oil temperature limits, including during an overload. For oil filled units, this means adequate radiator surface area, optimized oil flow paths, and optional pumped oil or forced air cooling. For a dry type, the channels of air ventilation and for higher ratings, air ducts. Our cast resin transformers use epoxy resins with high thermal conductivity for superior heat dissipation. The engineer will do thermal analysis and have the results confirmed by real temperature rise tests at our in house lab facility. We may also add monitoring facilities such as winding temperature indication, or oil level gauging.

Customization for Site-Specific Demands

Every installation is different. To be able to do the job you need to do, efficiently, reliably and for the longest possible time, any given power transformer needs to be designed around your particular requirements regarding voltages, power, environmental conditions and load cycle. Generic solutions frequently force you into compromises on performance and longevity. Make sure the power transformer company has well-developed R&D resources and can adapt the transformer design to include the optimum core configuration, tap changer range, bushing style, enclosure type, and cooling system. At Ryan Electric, our skilled R&D department designs power transformers up to 10MVA with primary voltages from 3.3kV up to 132kV – custom designed with any required accessories such as seismic resilient construction, tropicalized coating, low noise option, high altitude derating and more. So if you require a pad-mount transformer for your coastal solar project, a substation transformer for your data center, a VPI transformer for an indoor mine operation, our custom built power transformers ensure there is absolutely no compromise required.

Our features explain why a power transformer is high-performing, from our state-of-the-art core material to the extreme testing standards, superior thermal performance and intelligent customization- Jiangsu Ryan Electric combines the expertise of our global engineering team with our advanced, automated, and tested processes to provide a power transformer that leads in every characteristic. The Jiangsu Ryan Electric power transformer solutions, exported to over 80 countries, and UL, CE, IEEE, DEKRA and ASTA approved are designed to set an even higher benchmark for the electrical power industry.
