The oil immersed transformer is a cornerstone of large power grids, thanks to its excellent thermal performance. Insulating oil is used not only to provide insulation but also as a very effective cooling medium. Naturally or forced oil circulated (ONAN/ONAF) effectively dissipates heat generated by core and winding losses to be dissipated effectively, allowing the transformer to withstand a heavy overload without starting to degrade the insulation system. This is a very important function to ensure grid stability, especially during peak demand or contingency operations when transformers might have to run continuously at 110% of their rating.
